Debt-Relief-Options--Fast-Track Is Credit Counseling Worth It?

When you struggle with debt, finding a solution that works for your life is critical. But is a credit counseling program the answer? It can be, but it is important that you understand several underlying details first. Let’s explore credit counseling in more depth so you can make the most informed decision — and climb out of debt for good.

The Ins and Outs of Credit Counseling

Credit counseling offers a free review of your financial picture. Through this process, the counselor will see if a debt management plan (DMP) is a feasible solution for you. Your counselor can negotiate with your creditors to create the DMP for your unsecured debt, which has more manageable monthly payments.

This plan comes with a cost, and credit counselors do make money by enrolling you. They're only supposed to sign you up if they determine you cannot keep up with your current payments. Since they don't make anything off their free advice, credit counselors have an incentive to enroll you in the plan – even if you don't need it.

That said, credit counselors do this for a living, just like other financial professionals. They can help you manage a budget, remain disciplined, and stay driven to work your way out of debt. In some cases, the fee is well worth it for those struggling with spending discipline.

But credit counseling is not a viable option for everyone in debt. One of the most important steps in getting out of debt is being aware of all of the alternatives.

Hardship Programs

Credit card companies offer hardship programs for customers going through a rough spot, such as a job loss or medical situation. But they rarely suggest them to you, even if you're racking up late fees and penalties for unpaid monthly minimums. These are profit-driven companies, after all.

You have to ask about hardship programs directly. Once you do, your credit card company gives you the details. These programs work similarly to debt management plans: the difference is that you won't be paying a fee for it. That fee can add up to $600 per year, and when you're in debt, a difference like that is significant.

A hardship program closes your account and turns it into a fixed loan at a lower rate. This should work to lower your payment. If your credit card provider is unsure about putting you on a hardship program, let them know that you are considering other options, such as a credit counselor, debt relief options, and bankruptcy. This will usually catch their attention and make them take your inquiry seriously. They would much rather recoup partial payment than no payment at all.

Debt Consolidation Loan

A debt consolidation loan is another avenue for getting out of debt. Essentially, you take out a loan and use it to pay off debts like those mounting credit card bills. Of course, this means you are responsible for making monthly payments on the loan you've taken out instead.

For this to work, the terms of the consolidation loan need to be more favorable than the terms of the debts you currently owe. This method must put you in a better and more manageable place. It also means you have to be able to qualify for such a loan. People with an otherwise good financial history or who have collateral may be able to do this. However, many people who are in debt won't be able to get a loan like this approved in the first place.

The good news is that you can check out your eligibility or apply for a debt consolidation loan no matter what. Don't be deterred from investigating this solution. It's one of the better debt relief options that's out there.

Debt Settlement

Debt settlement can be a powerful tool in terms of erasing your debt. Debt relief options cover a range of different circumstances. They're geared toward settling your debt at a lesser amount than your outstanding balance. For instance, if you owe $10,000, they may be able to negotiate a settlement that sees you paying $5,000 of it.

Of course, debt settlement negotiators do get paid, but the way they are compensated is interesting. For their fee, they charge a portion of the money they saved you. Take that $10,000, for instance. Let's say they charge 15% of what they save you (this is only an example for simple math). If they settle your debt at $6,000, they earn 15% of the $4,000 they saved you. That amounts to a $600 fee. This means that you've paid a total of $6,600 to erase a total of $10,000 in debt.

Now let's say they're able to settle that debt of $10,000 for just $3,000. That's a fairly common settlement rate. They assess their fee based on the $7,000 they've saved you. In this example, they make $1,050. It still means you've paid a total of $4,050 to erase a total of $10,000 in debt.

In other words, they get paid more when they save you more. This is a clever system because it incentivizes them to save you as much as is possible.

Debt relief options are wide and varied. A credit counseling program may be best for you, but make sure you learn about all your options. They each have different effects on credit reports and a variety of other factors — and they can save you different amounts of money. Each has advantages depending on your particular situation. Don’t wait to ask for help in choosing the right path to debt-free living.
