Get-Out-Of-Debt--Fast-Track Danger of Making Debt Feel “Normal”

When you fall into debt, there's a real danger of treating it as your new normal. This is a moving of the goal posts that can impact your life and severely limit your future. You can't come up with a plan to get out of debt if you don't even look at being in debt as a problem. If you haven't   explored debt relief options, then you won’t be able to achieve financial freedom and control. On the flip side, if you treat debt like a problem, you can find a solution that will work for you.

How You Normalize Debt

Many people fall into debt for reasons that aren't their fault. Maybe a medical emergency happened. Maybe someone stole from you. Maybe the business you worked for never paid you for work you delivered. Maybe you were left to help pay off someone else's debts.

To be as blunt as possible, being in debt sucks. It's hard to get over that anger that now your life is affected because of someone else or because of factors you couldn't control. That anger is legitimate. You shouldn't chase it off, but you do need to compartmentalize it.

The simple fact is that now you need to pay off that debt. Maybe it is your fault, maybe it isn't, but this won't change your credit score and your bank balance. The first step is acknowledging debt is a problem. Then becomes the steps that will lead you out of it.

Stop the Bleeding

The biggest mistake that people in debt make is ignoring their situation for the first several months. This is when penalties and fees rack up. Debt can increase by thousands of dollars, in some cases, simply because you're not communicating.

If a credit card company calls and you can't pay the monthly minimum to keep it current, you feel scared. You feel ashamed. So you don't pick up. They can't get hold of you, so they assess you a late fee. Enough of those and they change your interest rate. Late fees pile atop late fees and a few thousand in debt adds another thousand or two on top of that.

Now what would have happened if you picked up that phone? You tell the person on the other end that you can't pay this month. They ask what your situation is. You tell them, realistically, that you don't know whether you'll be able to make payments for a while. You're honest about your situation. The credit card company has a hardship program. Your decide to move your account to this hardship program. Interest charges drop so that you can pay off month by month, perhaps at a lesser amount.

All that took was picking up the phone and talking. You just needed to tell your credit card company what your situation is. Now, we don't mean to paint credit card companies as angels. They do this because they'd rather keep an account in-house than send it to collections, especially if the person will eventually pay the balance off. Entering people into hardship programs is better for their bottom line than giving the account up to a collections agency. Yet in this case a step that helps them can also be a step that helps you.

Make a Budget

If you're in debt, you will need to make changes. Host potlucks instead of going out to restaurants. Rent a movie instead of going to the theater. Go for a hike instead of to an amusement park. A few small sacrifices can make a big difference, while still allowing you the ability to have the same kind of social life.

Your friends should understand that if you need to save, you can't do everything. Expect them to accommodate that from time to time and expand the number of things they want to do to include you. And, really, you will likely not be the only one struggling with finances anyway.

Budget your bills and expenses. Prioritize what can be paid, and what can be saved. You won't get out of debt in a day, but if you take a step in the right direction every day, you can make great strides. Debt doesn't have to be your new normal.

Debt Relief Options

You should also investigate your debt relief options. A debt settlement can resolve your debts at a fraction of what you owe. A debt consolidation plan can adjust your monthly payments into something more manageable. Not everyone qualifies for these, but if you can, they offer good, avenues that can speed up the process of getting out of debt.

Debt relief options work because credit card companies can be negotiated with. Like we said earlier, credit card companies don't often see major debts paid off in full. They'd rather get a portion of it paid off then none of it at all. This means that they may negotiate settling at a smaller balance under the right circumstances.

Now, if you pay none of it off, you trap yourself in a bad situation, and can eventually be forced toward bankruptcy. If you can pay some, or pay at a different rate, this kind of agreement also puts you in a better situation. We've seen people settle a credit card debt at 30% of what they owed in some cases. It's a way that the credit card company and you can both walk away with a win.

Don't normalize debt. People do this out of fear, and they're afraid because they don't know all the options they have to get out of debt. Look for answers, make some changes, and follow a plan. There are tools and strategies available to you, but only if you look for them.
