7 Ways to Get Ahead of Debt for Recent Graduates

Graduating college is daunting -especially if you're taking complete control of your finances for the first time. If your school doesn’t offer credit counseling services, reality can be a tough pill to swallow. Here are 7 important tips to stay ahead of debt once you have your degree:

  1. Save Now

Don't wait. Many loans offer grace periods after graduation. Federal Stafford Loans allow you six months and federal Perkins Loans allow nine months. If your monthly student loan payments would have been $400, this allows you to save either $2,400 on a Stafford in six months, or $3,600 on a Perkins loan in nine months. Pay this into your savings, or devote a bit more to your loan once monthly payments start.

  1. Do the Math

If possible, choose a shorter repayment plan. A good rule of thumb is this: if your annual income exceeds your student loan debt, repay it on a 10 year plan. If your student loan debt exceeds your annual income, repay on a 20 year plan. Paying faster means less interest will accrue, but only do this if you can manage it.

  1. Look at Income-Based Repayment

The federal government allows a variety of income-dependent repayment plans. These can limit your payments to 15-percent of your discretionary income. At the end of 25 years, any remaining balance is forgiven. Other income-based plans offers similarly flexible options.

  1. Serve a Year or Two

If you work for certain programs, such as AmeriCorps, the federal government will forgive up a portion of your loan. It could exceed $5,000 a year in many circumstances.

  1. Jump the Gun

If you can pay a bit extra on your loans now and then, the savings really add up. An extra few hundred a year toward your loans can mean you pay them off two or three years faster.

  1. Don't Abuse Forbearance

Forbearance allows you to reduce payments, sometimes as long as years at a time. You still accrue interest during this period, however, meaning your loan debt continues to escalate. Use forbearance when appropriate, but don't allow yourself to depend on it.

  1. Manage Other Debt

Beware the bane of the new graduate's existence: credit cards. They promise high ceilings of spending with what seem like manageable rates...unless you allow them get out of hand. They can be a shortcut to establishing a life on your own, as well as a life of debt.

If you're in need of credit counseling services, don't ignore the problem. Get a free debt relief quote from Fast Track Debt Relief. We’ll help you find the best way to get - and stay - out of debt.
