Credit-Counseling-Company--Fast-Track 6 Ways to Avoid Credit Card Debt

Credit card debt can effectively torpedo your life and your sense of security. How can you avoid it? It takes smart spending, yes, but often people go into debt because unforeseeable circumstances stress their normal budget. Here are six additional ways to avoid credit card debt:

  1. Keep an emergency fund. Start building it early. If you encounter an unexpected car repair bill or a medical emergency that you can't pay for, an emergency fund makes the difference between having breathing room and going into debt. The key difference is that debt takes time to pay off, and as you're paying it off, it gathers interest for your creditors. An emergency fund can gather interest for you, and when you use it, you dip into what you already have rather than what you haven't. Even if it's a small rainy day fund, it can take the edge off of some scary financial circumstances.

  1. Try to charge what you can pay off at the end of a month. This way, if you don't have the cash for it, you won't buy it. It requires a good bit of willpower, but once it's a habit it's surprisingly easy to stick to.

  1. Don't miss payments. This can result in additional charges that throw your other finances off. If you do miss a payment, call the credit card company. Ask for the late fee to be forgiven. If you have a reasonable credit history, they'll often charge the extra but put it toward your balance instead of assessing an additional fee.

  1. If you get yourself in a debt situation, don't ignore it. It will only snowball  the longer you don't address it.

  1. Don't take cash advances. These can go wrong in a number of ways; they create a false sense of having cash resources, while simultaneously building your debt.

  1. Understand changes to your credit card terms. Often we toss a letter or click past an e-mail that notifies us of changes. If the small print is overwhelming, call them. Make sure you're clear if due dates are changing or interest rates are going up. Understand how it changes your financial picture.

There are many more ways to avoid credit card debt - or at least avoid growing it. If you need help, call a credit counseling company to get a better read on your options.
