6-Steps-to-Pay-Off-Debt--Fast-Track 6 Steps to Paying off Debt

Paying off credit card debt is a goal that millions of Americans have in common. In fact, the average household in the U.S. carries more than $15,000 in credit card debt! While that may seem like a manageable amount to some people, the truth is that paying off these debts can be tough. Even without assistance from debt relief programs, whittling away at the amount owed can be a long and stressful process. If your goal is to get your credit card debt down to nothing, try these 6 steps for paying it off:

  1. Take a look at where your money is going. Outside of fixed bills, such as rent or mortgage and utilities, you may be surprised at all the places your money is being spent. Take some time to track your purchases, right down to that $2 cup of coffee.
  2. Total up those extra expenses. After you’ve been tracking your spending for a month, tally up those unnecessary purchases. Chances are, you’ll be pretty surprised at just how big the figure is.
  3. Remove the extras. Now that you realize just how much you’re spending on extra purchases you don’t need, it’s time to cut them (or most of them) out of your life and put that money to better use. Instead of spending it on unnecessary stuff, use it to pay down your credit card debt.
  4. Reduce your fixed expenses. Cutting back on variable spending (those extra purchases we just covered) can do a lot of good, but if you’re still struggling to put a dent in your credit card debt, it may be time to lower your fixed expenses. Do what you can to lower your household bills, such as adjusting the temperature on your thermostat or taking shorter showers (hey, every little bit helps!). You can also try to negotiate lower interest rates on any loans that you have outstanding.
  5. Increase your income. If possible, try to boost your income. This can be done in a variety of ways, including picking up overtime, trading in vacation hours for pay, or taking on a part-time job. If you get a big tax refund each year, you may want to reduce your withholdings so your take-home pay each month is more and your tax refund is less.

Re-evaluate your credit situation. Now is also a good time to take a look at your credit. Transfer high interest debts to cards with lower rates, or call your creditors to see if there’s any way you can score a lower interest rate. Debt relief programs can also help, with both advice and consolidation options
