Family-Budgeting--Setting-up-a-Budget--Fast-Track-Debt-Relief 15 Family Budgeting Tips

Setting up a budget is crucial when you're trying to save money or escape debt. And it’s not as difficult to learn as you might think. Once you get the process down, it's not even that time consuming.

Family budgeting can also help you teach money management to your children. In an age-appropriate way, you can explain why you may not be able to buy certain items (want vs. need), and it gives them a good head start on their own financial management.

Don't scare children if you're in serious financial trouble, but do involve them so that they have a sense of how money works. First you need to know how and where to start saving. Let's start with the budget and move from there.

  1. Make a Budget. The first step is setting up a budget. If you don't know how to do this, it's time to learn! Collect all your receipts, pay stubs, and bills. Create a column of incoming money and a column of outgoing money. You want to be saving or paying off debts a little bit more every month. Many people become overwhelmed or discouraged at this point, especially when the outcoming column outweighs the incoming. Don’t give up. There are a lot of people in this situation, and you can be a success story.
  2. Get Budget Advice. If you need help creating a budget, don't be shy. Ask friends and family who know how to budget to help you. The best way to learn is from someone you know and trust. If you need a third party, consult a credit counselor.
  3. Make a Place for Your Budget. Decide on a place where you'll do your budget every month. This dedicates a specific desk, table, or other area where you can focus. This helps you prioritize doing your budget and staying current on updating it.
  4. Clip Coupons. You'd be amazed at the amount you can still save by clipping coupons given out freely or featured online. When you're at the grocery store, pick up fliers and coupon catalogues. Don't buy things you won't use, but do see if there are savings on the items you need.
  5. Buy in Bulk. Look at prices per pound, or per item – not overall prices. If these aren't listed, look at weights or measurements and be ready to do some math in your head or on your phone. Again, only buy what you need, and if you cannot use bulk items before they expire, don’t waste the money.
  6. Resist Impulse Buys. Create a document on your phone or computer where you can write down tempting purchases that you decided not to make. This way, you can document the money you saved. Don’t forget to give yourself a pat on the back. It’s difficult to resist temptation; when you see how successful you are, though, it becomes much easier.
  7. Turn Devices Off. Turning off the TV or computer when you leave the room can save a surprising amount each month. Even $20 or $30 a month adds up to a few hundred dollars saved each year.
  8. Find Out if You Get Discounts. Many businesses feature military, senior, and teacher discounts. Use them. If a business you use doesn't offer them, suggest that they should.
  9. Get AAA. If you drive, and especially if you have an older car, get a AAA membership. Telling you to pay for a membership seems counterintuitive, but paying $66-100 a year can save you a lot. Even if you have to get towed once, you've still saved a hundred or more dollars. If a family member already has a membership, adding you on should cost a fraction of the regular membership. AAA members also get discounts at many businesses.
  10. Find Affordable Entertainment. Going to the movies is fun, but it quickly gets expensive. Look to see if your local theater does discount days or go to matinees on weekends. When you go, don't buy the overpriced popcorn, soda, or candy. Renting a movie is even more affordable, and it allows you to enjoy a movie in the comfort of your own home.
  11. Use Your Local Library. They'll have books, movies, games, and audiobooks that you can borrow. If you don’t need the internet at home, you can use theirs. Today’s libraries offer a stunning array of programming for children and adults, and much of it completely free. Take advantage of classes to learn new skills and hobbies.
  12. Consider Ditching Cable. Online alternatives are getting better and feature original programming that's on par with cable. They cost a fraction of the price, and new alternatives even show live sports, so you won't miss your favorite team.
  13. Look for Free Events. Communities often hold concerts, outdoor movie showings, parties, races, hiking days – the list of possible events are endless. You can meet people and have fun without spending a dime.
  14. Cut Down on Eating Out. If you pay for lunch out at work, take bag lunches. Turn dinners with friends into potlucks. These can be even more fun. Because they're less formal, you can share recipes, and children can spend energy in a way they wouldn't be able to at a restaurant.
  15. Hit Up the Thrift Store. You can find good deals on a range of items, including electronics. Even if you don't like 90% of what's there, that still leaves a lot that will appeal to you at a fraction of regular prices.

These are just a few tips that can help you save money. Family budgeting doesn't have to be stressful, and doesn't mean you cut out everything that's fun in your life. You can still do a lot, and you should.

If you're in debt, consider a debt relief program as one option that can help you escape faster or pay those debts off without accruing such large interest fees. There are more options than you think. You just need to take steps that return to you that feeling of control over your own life.
