10 Ways to Start Getting Out of Debt

Getting out of debt can be tremendously difficult. You can start and find success, and then make one or two decisions that make you fall right back to where you started. It doesn't just take the effort to start, it also takes the discipline of forming and sticking to new habits. Here are 10 tips:

  1. Make sure you know exactly what you owe. Making payments toward a murky figure won't help you keep track of the progress you're making and will make it seem a far more daunting task.
  1. Organize your payments and expenses. You may not want to face the numbers that you owe, but after you get everything together, you will feel a burden lift. Believe it or not, it is less stressful having done this work than constantly feeling disorganized and overwhelmed.
  1. Find easy ways to take the edge off bills. You may not be able to cut much off your electric, heating, and water bills, but you can cut a bit off each by conserving. Larger bills like cable expenses can be replaced with an online service for far less that still offers TV shows and movies.
  1. Curb your spending habits. Find alternate ways of enjoying a night out for a fraction of the cost. It doesn't mean you have to give up what you love to do, it just means you have to find a less expensive way to do it.
  1. If you can, find a way to take on increased income. This can also come from garage sales or selling old DVDs, CDs, video games, and collectibles. You'd be surprised, but a box of old DVDs may still net you an extra $100.
  1. Jewelry and clothes you don't wear anymore can also be sold to make life just a little bit easier. This can go toward paying your debt faster, toward your bills, or toward a rainy day fund to give you a buffer against emergency.
  1. Figure out what debt to focus on first. The lowest balance? The highest interest rate? Make a plan, ask others for advice, and stick to it.
  1. Talk to your credit card company. You might want to hide every time the phone rings, but pick it up or call them instead. Ask if they can lower your interest rate or if hardship programs are available. You might be surprised what they offer if you only ask.
  1. If you have student loans, consider forgiveness options, forbearance, or alternate loan plans that may help you direct funds toward higher-interest debt. Do not stop paying them though: this can affect your credit, employment options, etc.
  1. Find free fun. There are always public events happening during the summer, free museum days, historical events, even movies, festivals, and concerts. These are good, community-oriented ways of going out that don't cost money.

If you can, look at debt relief programs. They won't fit every situation, but they can help many toward getting out of debt.
