Debt-Relief-Company--Fast-Track How to Get Out of Holiday Debt Faster

The holidays are joyous, but they can eat through our wallets faster than anything else. That can leave January, February, March, April, and so on looking much leaner than you anticipated. That's the false promise of making exceptions on a budget: purchases are a one-time thing, but you're then left recovering from it for months. Here are some steps to help you get out of holiday debt faster.

Seven Steps for Handling Holiday Debt

1. Take a look at your financial picture. Organize your finances and assess the full picture of what you have to work with. To get out of holiday debt faster, you have to know what exactly that debt is, down to the dollar, and how it compares to your savings and your income.

2. Make a plan to pay off that holiday debt. Even if the weather outside is frightful, don’t let your debt snowball. Debt that sits there just creates more debt. Pay more than the minimum payment when you can, even if it’s just an additional $10. Minimum payments will pay off a debt very slowly because interest on the balance is working directly against it. The higher the balance, the more interest accrues. Making bigger payments on a card helps drive that balance – and thus that interest accrual – down.

3. Call your credit card company. When people get in debt, they often find themselves hesitant to speak with their creditors. This is exactly the moment that you need to pick up the phone and be more willing to engage.

If your credit is good, you may even be able to ask a credit card company to cut their interest rate lower. If you have to miss a payment, they'll have on record that you at least contacted them. If you're in truly dire straits, many creditors have hardship programs that cut rates while you pay back your debt. This may require suspending or closing a card, but it's worth it if you are underwater.

4. Focus your extra payments on one card. One approach is to choose the card with the lowest balance, so you can pay this off quickly. Another approach is to choose the card with the highest interest rate, so you can knock away interest accrual before it happens.

Try the Debt Snowball Method. Say you owe $1000 on Card A and $2000 on Card B, with minimum payments of $30 each. Try paying $75 on Card A and $30 on Card B. When you clear Card A, tack that $75 onto Card B’s payment for a total of $105. This is no different than last month, but you are paying more than three times Card B’s minimum. You’ll kill that debt much faster. When that’s paid off, move on to Card C and so on - or start building your emergency fund. The Debt Snowball approach has been proven to be a remarkably effective debt relief technique.

5. Optimize your solutions. If you're looking at repaying a debt over a long period of time, it may be worth it to transfer the balance to another card. Some offers allow you a 0% balance transfer credit account. There will be a one-time fee, usually in the range of 2- or 3-percent. If your interest rate is high, transferring the debt will save you money if you pay it off within the 0-percent period. This period is usually 12 or 18 months.

A Word of Caution: if you don't pay off that transferred balance within the 0% interest period, interest will be assessed all at once across the entire period you've had this new account. In other words, the interest is still being added up. If you pay off your debt within the specified  time period, you never pay that interest. If you don’t - then you’ll see your bill climb. If you can't pay that debt within the 12 or 18 months the account prescribes, this will only leave you in a worse position.

6. Create a plan for how you'll spend your income. You want to be putting as much as you can into zeroing out holiday debt over time. But your plan can't just be about paying off the debt. It also has to be about the saving so you can pay more than the minimum and start an emergency savings fund.

An emergency fund can help you cover unexpected medical or mechanical (with a car or house) bills. For other expenses, consider alternatives – rent a movie instead of going out to see one, host a potluck instead of meeting friends for dinner. These are compromises with your situation, yes, but they can also be just as rewarding. The difference between $30 for tickets, popcorn, and soda going to see a movie versus $5 for the same at home can help you save extra funds more quickly than you realize.

7. If your debt is truly overwhelming, it might be time to look at other options. Meet with a debt relief company if your path to paying off your debt is too difficult. A debt relief company can negotiate on your behalf with your creditors. This can often result in settlements that see you paying a fraction of what you owe.

Now, a debt relief company is tightly regulated in what it can do and whom it can serve. Do your research on the company you want to work with to make sure it's following all the regulations that help protect you. Debt relief is work, not a “get out of debt free” card. But for those struggling, it can be an invaluable lifeline.

There is a trade-off in that affected accounts will be closed and your record will reflect the settlement in some ways. A debt relief company can help in certain situations that offer better alternatives than outright bankruptcy. It's a good solution for certain circumstances where you're struggling, and it's worth looking at further.
