You can pay off your debts and still enjoy your summer. As you look for consistent income through full-time employment or freelance jobs to help pay your financial obligations, remember to spend time with family and friends. All it takes is careful budgeting and scouting around for recreational and entertainment bargains.
Establish a monthly budget
Make a list of your debts, the dates they are due, and the amount you plan to pay on those debts. At the same time, make a list of monthly expenses, such as food, gas and utilities. Calculate the total amount of income you expect to receive for the month. Set aside the income that you will need for your expenses as well as what you need to either pay off a debt or make payments on the debt. You can even call your creditors to see if you could make special payment arrangements such as making weekly or biweekly payments or reducing the fixed payment amount, which could free up more income. Determining the amount of your left-over income will help you decide how you will enjoy your summer.
Economical ways to enjoy summer
You don't have to spend a lot of money or travel far from home to have summer fun. Look for promotions from local businesses, including grocery stores, offering reduced admission prices to amusement parks, museums, zoos and other entertainment venues. Locate places that you would like to visit that are no more than a two-hour drive away from your home. Traveling less than two hours away can save you money because you can return home rather than spend the night at a hotel. Depending on the amount of debt you owe, a day-long get-away may not be financially feasible. Fortunately, summertime provides a remedy for that. Most communities host two- or four-day annual events such as carnivals, state fairs, or fruit-related festivals (blueberry festival, strawberry festival, peach festival). These events are great for families on a strict budget because they are not far away and offer a wide range of activities for adults and children.
Reward yourself
There's one thing you have to do, regardless of your financial situation, and that is stop by your local ice cream shop for an ice cream cone, root beer float or banana split. Think of the treat as a reward for paying off a debt while enjoying the waning days of summer.
