Credit Report—Review it Yearly!

If you are one of the lucky few who do not have to worry about credit reports, you may still want to know what would be on it and who can have access to it. Also, a yearly review of your credit report is always a good idea. There may be a very small number of people who stay strictly on a cash basis, but for most consumers the information is out there—and for sale.

Credit Reports can get quite detailed, especially if you have been using credit cards and paying bills for many years. It will have your address, information on bills paid, and whether you had late payments or a bankruptcy. (Bankruptcies now stay on credit reports for 10 years.) Whenever you apply for credit, employment, insurance, or a rental, the information on your report can be provided for a fee to your creditor or prospective landlord. You, however, have the right to obtain a free credit report every twelve months from the three nationwide consumer reporting companies, that is, Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion, under the Fair Credit Reporting Act. Also, you should know that prospective employers need your permission before they can obtain your credit report.

Your free annual credit reports can be ordered either by calling 1-877-322-8228, or through annualcreditreport.com; or you may write to Annual Credit Report Request Service, P.O. Box 105281, Atlanta, GA 30348-5281. You can ask for all three reports at the same time or you can stagger them. By getting all three you will get the immediate correct picture of what is erroneous, needs explanation, or should be removed. You can then contact them and request that the information be corrected. Always make sure that your reported information is accurate and complete in case you need to apply for a loan or a job. If you are a victim of identity theft, this will show immediately on your credit report(s) because generally identity thieves use stolen information to open a new credit card account in your name and you wouldn’t know about it until much damage is done.

When your Credit Report is correct and shows a very low score it may interfere with your ability to obtain more credit, to rent an apartment, or to qualify for the purchase of a home. It will take some time to repair and raise a low credit report score. If you are in debt and want to get out of it, this is a good time to contact Fast Track.
